USSU Signs up as Official Road Map 2020 Champion
(April 7, 2009) The University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union (USSU) announced today that it has signed on as an official champion for Road Map 2020.
Road Map 2020 is a partnership between the Meewasin Valley Authority, the Saskatchewan Environmental Society, and the City of Saskatoon's Environmental Advisory Committee. Road Map 2020 seeks, in part, to develop greater awareness of the social and economic benefits of sustainable practices in Saskatoon.
In March of this year, the University Students’ Council unanimously passed a resolution for the USSU to become a champion for the initiative.
“There’s no question that students support a sustainable Saskatoon and a sustainable world, and Road Map 2020 will allow students to become more involved in the direction of their city,” said Shannon Dyck, USSU VP Student Affairs. “The USSU is committing to Road Map 2020 because it is seen as encompassing the same values as the USSU, while also being in line with the USSU’s vision and mission.”
In accordance with the initiative’s declaration, the USSU endorsement also means that the organization supports the concept of a sustainable Saskatoon, will demonstrate leadership by modeling sustainable practices, and will focus future sustainability efforts on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Dyck said that sustainability initiatives promoted by Road Map 2020 would have long-term positive impacts on the city of Saskatoon.
“We recognize that sustainability may come with an upfront cost but in the long run, sustainable choices are cheaper and will also stimulate a local economy that we hope will be based on developing green technologies and discovering more efficient ways of using resources.”
