USSU Executive Meets with Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall

(October 27 - 2009) The University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union Executive met today with Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall to discuss issues relevant to U of S students, and to give the Premier a tour of the current renovation and expansion of the Place Riel Student Centre on the U of S campus.

The meeting was the first formal get-together between Premier Wall, and the 2009-10 USSU Student Executive.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive, USSU External VP Chris Stoicheff said the meeting was important to engage the Provincial government on issues that affect students.

“The meeting with Premier Wall was a great opportunity to address student interests and concerns in a positive and constructive manner,” said Stoicheff.

Stoicheff said student loan interest rates, the government’s tuition management strategy and the implementation of a Saskatchewan Scholarship Fund were among some of issues discussed by the Executive and Premier Wall.

The importance of continuing to develop an inclusive, accessible, and high-quality post-secondary education for all students at the University of Saskatchewan was also discussed.

“Saskatchewan needs a highly skilled and educated workforce to sustain its prosperity and remain competitive in an increasingly global and knowledge-based economy,” said Stoicheff.

“By coming to campus and meeting with students, the Premier has demonstrated that student interests are a government priority. We look forward to making progress on the issues discussed.”
