USSU Executive Statement Over Petition Circulated by Brad Trost, MP Saskatoon-Humboldt The University of Saskatchewan Students’ Union condemns a petition being circulated by Brad Trost, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Humboldt. Mr. Trost’s petition calls for the Government of Canada to stop all funding of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. The USSU recognizes that the International Planned Parenthood Federation promotes the establishment of gender equality and is a leading advocate of sexual and reproductive health and rights issues around the world. While the USSU Women’s Centre is not funded by the federal government, cutting funds to the International Planned Parenthood Federation indirectly affects the community the USSU Women’s Centre serves and supports. The USSU Women’s Centre is a pro-choice organization that serves as a resource and information centre where students are encouraged to build community, discuss issues and, organize initiatives supporting gender equality and human rights. Therefore, the USSU opposes a recent petition to be submitted to the House of Commons by Brad Trost MP (Saskatoon-Humboldt) that calls upon the Government of Canada to stop all funding of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. The USSU encourages students to voice their concerns over Mr. Trost’s petition by phoning, writing or emailing Mr. Trost. Students are also being provided the option of signing a petition in support of continued funding for the International Planned Parenthood Federation.” To download the petition in support of continued funding for the International Planned Parenthood Federation, please click here. |
